HIKEWISE partners meet in Madrid for the LTTA hosted by Universidad Francisco de Vitoria

5/27/2026

The HIKEWISE partnership gathered in Madrid for a two-day Learning, Teaching and Training Activity (LTTA) hosted by Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV), Spain. This important milestone brought together partners from Spain, Greece, Belgium, Romania and Türkiye to continue working on the project’s mission: supporting current and future secondary PE teachers in the planning and delivery of outdoor sports activities, especially hiking, while promoting environmental awareness and active lifestyles among students.

The LTTA was designed as a train-the-trainer activity, allowing project partners to receive specific training from an expert on the topic of hiking, orientation, and outdoor sports classes. Throughout the sessions, participants shared ideas, reviewed the materials developed so far, and strengthened a common approach for the next stages of the project. Special attention was given to how these materials can be practical, accessible and useful for teachers in different educational contexts.

A key part of the meeting was the reflection on how hiking and outdoor sports can become much more than physical activity. When properly integrated into education, they can support students’ physical health, social interaction, emotional wellbeing, environmental responsibility and connection with nature. The partners also discussed how to make outdoor activities safer, more inclusive and more meaningful for students with diverse needs and backgrounds.

In addition to the training and collaborative sessions, the LTTA included an outdoor hiking activity in Casa de Campo, Madrid. This practical experience allowed participants to explore how an accessible urban natural environment can be used as a learning space. The activity helped connect the theoretical discussions with real outdoor practice, showing how hiking routes and nature-based activities can be transformed into educational opportunities.

This meeting represents an important step forward for HIKEWISE. The feedback gathered during the LTTA will contribute to improving the project materials before they are used in future training sessions and pilot activities across partner countries. These next stages will involve current and future PE teachers, who will test and adapt the resources in real educational settings.

More updates, resources and project results will be available soon on the HIKEWISE website and social media channels.
